Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site Receives National Park Service’s 2019 Environmental Achievement Award

The Friends would like to congratulate the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site on receiving the National Park Service’s 2019 Environmental Achievement Award! This award is given for exceptional accomplishments in sustainability. In a news release by the park, they stated that “This award follows the park’s implementation of a Climate Friendly Parks Action Plan. This Plan included management actions that would reduce the environmental footprint and contribute to achieving the goal of reducing park greenhouse gas emissions.” To fulfill this goal, the park converted lighting to LED across the park, installed solar panels on the administrative building and connected the gutters and downspouts to a rainwater collection cistern. The park also installed a propane fueling station and converted three vehicles and 2 mowers to bi-fuel.
