NAME THE GOAT RAFFLE. IT’S FUN AND HISTORICAL!
From May 1 to June 1 you can enter our online “Name the Goat” raffle to re-rename Nan’s kid, Nix. The raffle pull will be at the Flat Rock Village Ice Cream Social on June 1. In addition to giving Nix a new name, the raffle winner will receive a gift basket donated by Mast General to The Friends. To enter, go to http://www.friendsofcarlsandburg.org/become-a-friend/. Click on the EVENT tab and buy a ticket.
One way Mrs. Sandburg tracked her herd’s lineage was by goat moms and kids sharing the same first initial in their names. (For example, Nan gave birth to Nix). The park continues this tradition. They also pick goat names to celebrate Sandburg’s writings. What does this mean for the raffle? You have options:
Option 1. Pick a name that begins with the letter N (since Nan gave birth to Nix).
Option 2. Pick a name from Sandburg’s “Rootabaga Stories” to celebrate their publication 100 years ago. (Nix is a Rootabaga Stories character).
Option 3. Just pick a favorite name.
Option 4. Come meet Nix at the Ice Cream Social on June 1st at the Flat Rock Village Hall.
The winner will be notified in early July by email.
TAKE A HIKE. SAVIOR THE VIEW.
While the bridge at the front lake remains closed, consider taking a 1-mile hike to the top of Big Glassy Mountain. Along the way you will pass several benches and most likely a few dogs and other hikers. At the top are benches and boulders for resting and taking in the panoramic view of Blue Ridge Mountains. By parking at the “Hikers Lot” (pass the front entry and just around the bend on Little River Road) you’ll have easy access into the park and up to the barn. From there, a short path leads to the woods and trail heads. Enjoy!
