Glassy Mountain Celebration

Our 2021 Glassy Mountain Celebration is underway and we are excited to invite you to join in the celebration with us! Our central theme celebrates the natural beauty of Connemara’s landscape and views. Each day, local residents and visitors from all over the world enjoy this special glimpse of Western North Carolina. The Friends of Carl Sandburg could think of no better way to honor the Sandburg legacy than to dedicate our celebration to a trail they loved and traveled often- Big Glassy. We have many events planned and hope that you will check back here, or on our Facebook and Instagram pages, frequently for updates

QUILT RAFFLE, MAY 26 TO SEPTEMBER 26

How much do you love cozying up under a beautiful, warm quilt? The Friends of Carl Sandburg are pleased to offer you a chance to win a quilt (pictured) that was produced by Beth Berglin, a local Flat Rock quilter, and finished at the Sheridan Kay Quilting Studio.  All materials, time and equipment usage were donated, and we extend a very special thanks to them for turning this project into reality.. The pieced quilt top was inspired by a vintage quilt that was acquired from a small antique shop in Southern Illinois and is believed to be circa 1930’s/1940’s. The finished quilt measures 81″ by 81″ and will be on display at the quilting studio, located at 1680F Spartanburg Highway in Hendersonville. To purchase tickets, click here and select “Events”, and enter your information. Tickets will also be available at FOCS events, or from any board member. Tickets are $6.00 each or three for $15. The lucky winner will be drawn at the conclusion of the Hendersonville “Art on Main” event, September 25 and 26. Be sure to stop at our booth at this event to say hello and purchase your tickets!

BIG GLASSY- THE BEAR!

Our 2021 Glassy Mountain Celebration kicked off with the reveal of our entry in the 19th Annual Hendersonville Bearfootin’ Art Walk,  created and named after a trail loved and traveled by the Sandburg family- Big Glassy. Isn’t he handsome? You can find Big Glassy standing on the corner of 6th Avenue E. and Main St. in Downtown Hendersonville until October, when all of the bears will be auctioned to support local non-profit organizations like Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara.  Learn more about the Bearfootin’ Art Walk by clicking here including how you can bid on Big Glassy and take him home or to your place of business. This year we are fortunate to have the sponsorship or our bear underwritten by a group of local residents honoring former mayor of  Flat Rock, Bob Staton, for his 19 years of service to the community. Hats off to Bob and we thank his supporters for their generous donations.

SHOW US YOUR BIG GLASSY PHOTOS!

We know you have them, and we and the world want to see them! If you enjoy hiking the Big Glassy Trail at Connemara as much as we do, and if you can’t resist that “selfie” at the top or along the trail, head over to our Facebook page and post your pictures with the tag #BigGlassy. We’d love to see you, your family, and pets, and please tell us what it is that makes the Big Glassy trail special for you.

Or… post your pictures with our Big Glassy Bear in downtown Hendersonville! He promises to be good and stay very still while you take your photos. He’s on the corner of 6th Avenue E. and Main St.- you can’t miss him. We look forward to seeing your photos, and don’t forget to tag them with #BigGlassy.
